During the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt's administration allocated federal dollars to work relief programs. Some programs built the nation's infrastructure, such as roads and bridges. Some built public buildings, like post offices and libraries. And other programs focused on public works of art - murals, sculptures, plays, etc. - to provide financial aid to artists but perhaps more importantly, use art to highlight national heritage during a difficult time.
